Ukraine’s Central Bank Releases Silver Coin Marking 30 Years of the Hryvnia | Ukraine news

A limited silver issue looks back at the reform that replaced transitional money and established the currency Ukrainians use today.

On September 2, 2026, the National Bank of Ukraine issued a silver commemorative coin marking the 30th anniversary of monetary reform in Ukraine. The new coin is dedicated to the 1996 reform, which established the modern hryvnia as the country’s national currency.

This is reported by the NBU press service.

During the monetary reform, Ukraine introduced a national currency unit with the historic name hryvnia. Starting September 17, 1996, it became the sole legal tender throughout the country.

Specifications of the NBU silver coin

The commemorative coin has a face value of 1 hryvnia and is made of 925 fine silver. Its pure precious metal content weighs 31.1 grams, and its mintage does not exceed 5,000 pieces.

The coin was struck in the “special uncirculated” quality. Its edge is smooth and bears incuse inscriptions. Some of the decorative elements feature selective gilding.

Obverse design of the commemorative coin

The obverse is based on the design of the 1-hryvnia circulation coin issued in 2018. The small State Coat of Arms of Ukraine is depicted at the top, while the inscriptions “UKRAINE / 1 / HRYVNIA” appear in the center, surrounded by an Old Rus ornament.

The logo of the Banknote Printing and Minting Works of the National Bank of Ukraine is placed on the right side of the obverse. The year 2026, when the commemorative coin was struck, is indicated at the bottom.

What is depicted on the reverse

The reverse reproduces the design of the first 1-hryvnia circulation coin. It remained in circulation until 2018 and is now gradually being withdrawn.

In the center of the reverse, framed by an ornament of stylized branches, is the inscription “1 / HRYVNIA.” The year 1996, when the monetary reform took place in Ukraine, is indicated at the bottom.
