Crypto Market Update: Bitcoin Rallies 15%, Ethereum Pumps 17% Amid Bond Buybacks and Liquidations – News and Statistics

In a market analysis published on August 20, 2026, Aaron Dishner, co-founder and lead instructor at The Better Traders, Inc., outlined the factors driving recent cryptocurrency movements. According to Dishner, the U.S. Treasury’s decision to double long-duration bond buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation triggered a liquidity response, which was then accelerated by short liquidations totaling roughly $1.4 billion in four hours and $2.5 billion over 24 hours. He emphasized that this was liquidity management, not quantitative easing.

Bitcoin rose nearly 15% in four days, reaching the 0.618 Fibonacci level where overhead resistance overlaps. Dishner noted that a close above this level would significantly reduce the chances of dropping below $57,800, but such a close has not yet occurred. He described Bitcoin as strong bullish above its daily TBO Cloud, with the Relative Strength Index above 90 serving as a topping signal. Spot volume remained underwhelming at about $2 billion, and the weekly TBT Bullish Divergence is still forming, which could be an early reversal warning if it holds.

Ethereum experienced a 17% one-day pump, attributed to a liquidation cascade. Lower-tier cryptocurrencies lagged behind Bitcoin and Ethereum, as Bitcoin dominance and Ethereum dominance captured the flow. The U.S. dollar index turned strong bearish after dropping on the bond-buyback news, but traditional finance markets mostly did not mirror crypto. S&P Futures were largely unchanged, NVDA closed red, Asian indices showed muted reactions, and the VIX rose. Gold and silver pumped into overhead resistance before pulling back, while platinum closed above its 0.236 Fibonacci level.

For PAXG/BTC, Dishner noted that the pair dumped back to TBO Support with RSI moving toward oversold, but a conservative entry signal would only be valid with confirmation at the daily candle close. XRP gained nearly 19% in two days and printed a Close Short Wednesday, SOL rose above its Cloud and TBO Resistance, LINK reached TBO Resistance where some long profit could be taken, and ONDO tagged its Fast line, the first take-profit target.

UNI confirmed resistance on Wednesday’s pump, but Dishner warned that shorting is risky while the liquidation cascade is active, expecting more short liquidations over the next 24 hours. HBAR broke above long-term overhead resistance but is not yet confirmed. HYPE’s asserted Trump-related cause is tentative and not broadened. Dishner concluded that one-day pumps remain suspicious.
