China mobilizes public against ‘spying,’ from maps to finance

BEIJING — Chinese authorities are trying to enlist the public in a national effort to root out spies under a sweeping new anti-espionage law, with warnings on social media covering a wide array of newly scrutinized topics.

The Ministry of State Security has been posting about the crackdown on its official WeChat account, created in late July after the expanded law took effect. In addition to encouraging citizens to report suspicious behavior on its website or a phone hotline, it has talked about actual cases pursued by authorities.
