Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has urged professionals and academics to contribute to the country’s economic transformation by embracing public service and supporting reforms aimed at strengthening fiscal governance.
Oyedele made the call on Thursday while receiving students of the Executive Master’s in Taxation (EMT) programme of the University of Lagos during a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja.
Speaking to the delegation, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Abiola Sanni, the minister said the government was committed to developing skilled professionals capable of improving fiscal management, public finance and economic governance.
Reflecting on his transition from academia and professional practice to public office, Oyedele encouraged the students to apply their knowledge to solving real-world challenges and advancing reforms that promote sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
He also stressed the importance of strong institutions, transparency and accountability, saying lasting national progress depends on credible institutions rather than individuals.
He urged the students to maintain high standards of professionalism and integrity throughout their careers.
The UNILAG delegation congratulated Oyedele on his appointment and praised his contributions to teaching, mentorship and tax policy.
The students described his leadership in economic reforms as inspirational and presented him with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his contributions to education, taxation and national development.
The visit, according to the ministry, reflects its commitment to strengthening collaboration with stakeholders and mentoring future leaders in both the public and private sectors.
