Angelina Jolie’s glamorous California estate has caught the eye of Madonna, who may soon be back in the City of Angels, Gimme Shelter has learned.
The music superstar, who just celebrated her 68th birthday in Greece, expressed interest in viewing the “Couture” star’s Los Feliz estate even though she wasn’t in LA to see it in the flesh, Gimme Shelter can reveal exclusively.
Brokers, we hear, arranged for Madonna to tour the $29.85 million property by way of video.
“Madonna’s people called up and the tour was arranged,” a source said, adding that the neighborhood is a “wonderful colony in the upper Hollywood Hills with a lot of celebrity power.”
Co-listing brokers Ernie Carswell, of Sotheby’s International Realty and Jon Grauman of Resident Group, did not return calls at press time. Spokespersons for Madonna and Jolie also did not return calls.
While Madonna and Jolie don’t appear to have any kind of long-standing friendship, they are both iconic, independent, culture-defining talents who are each mothers to six children — a combination of biological and adopted kids.
Jolie first listed the property at 2000 De Mille Drive in May. It does not yet appear that she is looking to purchase anywhere else.
“I don’t think she knows” where she wants to be yet, a source said.
Brokers told Gimme Shelter they’re not surprised to hear that Madonna eyed the home. It’s been just over three years since she sold her Hidden Hills estate for $23 million — after buying it from Canadian R&B star the Weeknd for $19.3 million in 2021.
At the moment, Madonna’s properties include a triple-wide, 57-foot townhouse on East 81st Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It’s a combination of three townhouses. She also owns a Georgian townhouse in London and a horse farm in Bridgehampton that was formerly owned by Kelly Klein, the model and ex-wife of fashion designer Calvin Klein — as well as a property in Portugal.
Jolie’s gated property is part of Hollywood history. It was owned by filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille and his family for more than half a century.
DeMille, who died in 1959 at the age of 77, was a film pioneer. “The Squaw Man,” which he made, was the first American feature film to ever be released and led, ultimately, DeMille co-founding what is now known as Paramount.
His films include grand epics, such as the 1953 Oscar winner, “The Greatest Show on Earth,” as well as “The Ten Commandments,” “The King of Kings,” “Samson and Delilah” and “Cleopatra.” He also appeared as himself in Billy Wilder’s “Sunset Boulevard,” where the famous last line — from Gloria Swanson’s character, Norma Desmond, looking straight into the camera — is: “Alright, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.”
Jolie, the property’s latest Oscar-winning steward, bought the estate in June 2017 for $24.5 million, around nine months after she filed for divorce from Brad Pitt. In an interview, Jolie said she would leave LA when her children were adults. Her youngest kids, twins Knox and Vivienne, turned 18 last month.
Celebrities love the neighborhood because “it’s quiet and inaccessible. There are no tour buses up there, and there’s a sneaky way to get down to Sunset without going through Laurel Canyon,” a broker said.
The estate is anchored by a Beaux Arts mansion with a white stucco exterior and a red tiled roof — all in an elegant and refined, minimalist style, and built in 1913. There’s also a pool, a pool house, and a guest house/studio, a tea house and a garage with a security gate, all on 2.1 acres surrounded by rolling lawns, century old trees — and views of the Hollywood Hills and the Griffith Observatory.
DeMille bought the home in 1916. In 1920, he expanded the estate by purchasing the property next door, which was once home to Charlie Chaplin. The two homes were then joined by a glass corridor, although they are now separate properties again. The DeMille family retained the property until the late 1980s, according to the listing.
A winding path leads to the dwelling, with stairs up to the front door, surrounded by stately columns. Inside the five-bedroom main house, there’s a chef’s kitchen, a formal mahogany-paneled dining room, a step-down large living room, arched windows and a library.
There’s also a primary bedroom suite with a marble fireplace, a sitting room, a spa-like bath, a dressing room and a closet, plus French doors that open to a terrace.
The estate is at the highest point inside Laughlin Park — a gated enclave of around 60 homes across De Mille Drive, Linwood Drive, Cummings Drive and Laughlin Park Drive.
There, past and current residents include Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, Brie Larson, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. During the golden age of Hollywood, the enclave’s residents also included Carole Lombard and Lily Pons.
