‘Big John’ Zupp’s iconic Gold Coast estate hits market for $35m

5685 Anchorage Terrace, Sanctuary Cove has hit the market with a $35m price tag.

A Gold Coast waterfront mansion, once home to Queensland car dealer ‘Big John’ Zupp, has hit the market with a jaw-dropping $35m price tag.

The tri-level masterpiece on one of the most coveted streets in Sanctuary Cove, had been the family home of the late Wendy and Eric (John) Zupp, the car dealer and property developer widely known for his ‘Big John’ Zupp and ‘Any Old Iron’ advertising.

The late couple paid $12m for the property in 2012 and now the family is bringing the home to market following their passing.

The property, on an extraordinary 2,819sq m north-facing block at 5685 Anchorage Terrace, is on the market with Matt Gates of Ray White Sanctuary Cove,

“Having had the privilege of selling the property to the current owners all those years ago, it’s incredibly rewarding to now represent the family in bringing this remarkable home to market,” Mr Gates said.

“This is far more than a luxury residence; it’s a timeless waterfront estate that combines irreplaceable landholding, uncompromising craftsmanship and one of the finest main river positions in south east Queensland.

“Opportunities of this calibre are extraordinarily rare, and very few buyers will ever have the chance to own a property of this significance.”

If the $35m asking price is achieved, it will set a Gold Coast sales record for a residential property.

The luxury residence offers a range of living spaces, from formal lounge and dining rooms to a piano lounge, cinema, library and fireplace, alongside an alfresco entertaining pavilion complete with integrated barbecue and teppanyaki grill and wok facilities connected to the home via oversized bi-fold doors.

The resort-style entertaining terraces and spectacular pool complement the property’s standout drawcard — 35m of bridge-free waterfrontage, deepwater mooring and a private pontoon.

Inside, a sweeping central staircase and foyer set the tone for a home built on grandeur and craftsmanship, with designer furnishings, statement crystal lighting and a private lift servicing all three levels.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen is fitted with a full suite of premium Gaggenau appliances, including steam and specialty baking ovens, and dual dishwashers, induction cooking and integrated teppanyaki, built for serious entertainers and chefs alike.

The palatial master retreat features separate his and hers ensuites, designer dressing rooms, a concealed kitchenette and a private waterfront balcony, while four additional bedrooms each include their own ensuite and bespoke finishes.

The basement garage accommodates more than 10 vehicles, with space for a wellness retreat, workshop or recreational storage.

A fully self-contained guest residence adds further flexibility for visitors or multi-generational living.

There are plenty of different zones to relax or entertain.

The estate, approached via a circular driveway behind secure gates, is within Sanctuary Cove’s 24-hour monitored marina precinct.

The listing comes on the back of a record-breaking run for Mr Gates, who sold neighbouring properties 1033 Edgecliff Place in March for $14m and 1039 Edgecliff Place — a vacant block of land — in May for $23m.

It set a new residential record for a block of land in the precinct.

The highest price paid for a property on the Gold Coast is $28m in 2024, when billionaire businessman Clive Palmer bought a beachfront site on Hedges Ave in Mermaid Beach.
