Canadian Olympic gold medalist Mikael Kingsbury of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec won the gold medal in a World Cup dual moguls event in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Saturday. It was Kingsbury’s 89th career World Cup gold medal and 128th World Cup medal overall.
Kingsbury, who won the gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, beat silver medalist Pavel Kolmakov of Kazakhstan in the final. Kingsbury posted 35 points and Kolmakov did not finish. Landon Wendler of the United States won the bronze medal.
In the races leading up to the big final. Kingsbury beat Cole McDonald of the United States 24-11 in the round of 16, Nick Page of the United States 22-13 in the quarterfinals, and Wendler 22-13 in the semifinals.
With the win, Kingsbury clinched first place in the World Cup men’s aerials standings with 600 points. Ikuma Horishima of Japan is in second place with 372 points.
There is one more dual moguls World Cup event this season. That is in Chiesa in Valmalenco, Italy on March 16. Kingsbury has won the World Cup standings in men’s dual moguls in each of the last three years. The World Cup men’s dual moguls gold medal for Kingsbury in Almaty, Kazakhstan will give Kingsbury confidence when dual moguls will make its Olympic debut at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
