Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has estimated the total impact of a major security incident at around $6.3 billion, with approximately $3 billion worth of affected digital assets frozen on-chain in coordination with blockchain partners.
In an update issued on October 30, 2026, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume said its preliminary investigation suggested that the incident may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker allegedly used the access to enter a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions.
Binance said it had found no evidence of any wallet private-key compromise. It added that a detailed technical post-mortem would be published once the investigation was complete and the findings verified.
Binance has temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals as a precaution while security checks are underway. It has also revoked authorisation for the affected address and engaged law enforcement agencies and blockchain intelligence firms to trace and recover the funds.
Binance said it would cover all losses arising from the incident through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds, assuring customers that their assets remained safe. It also plans to publish an updated Proof of Reserves once remediation is complete.
The incident has prompted a wider industry response, with blockchain partners and digital asset issuers freezing funds linked to the breach. Binance said that approximately $3 billion had been frozen on-chain so far, with recovery efforts continuing.
The exchange said it is working with law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible. The full extent of the breach and the final amount of losses remain subject to investigation.
