The George II double gold guinea, estimated to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000, will be auctioned at Charterhouse’s two-day specialist sale of coins, medals, stamps, toys, and collectors’ items at its Sherborne Salerooms on August 20 and 21.
Richard Bromell of Charterhouse Auctioneers said: “The market for coins continues to remain strong and we have recently had some great results for coin collections.
“Having been involved with collecting coins for over 50 years, this is the first double guinea I have had the pleasure to see and am sure it will be the first time for many other collectors.”
Dating from 1740, the coin represents a rare piece of 18th-century history.
The double guinea, valued at £2 2s in its time, would have represented a considerable sum of money in 1740, when a loaf of bread cost just a penny.
The auction will also feature a wide range of other collector’s items.
