Gold Fails the Fear Test as $4,000 Comes Into View

Gold is having one of those moments when the bullish story still sounds perfectly reasonable, but the price has stopped cooperating, and that is usually when traders need to pay the closest attention.

The backdrop should have been almost gift-wrapped for bullion. Tech fear has exploded, Treasury yields have fallen, the dollar has softened and risk appetite has begun fraying around the edges, yet instead of reaching for the old safe-haven playbook, the market has been selling gold into the weakness. That does not suddenly invalidate the strategic bull case, but it does tell you that something inside the short-term transmission mechanism has gone badly out of tune.

• Gold has arrived at a genuine technical crossroads around $4,000, where long-term support meets a falling 200-day moving average.

• The warning signs are starting to cluster: silver has already broken lower, downside volatility is rising and speculative longs are losing conviction.

• The really uncomfortable part is what is not working. The dollar has softened, Treasury yields have fallen and tech fear has exploded, yet gold still cannot find its footing.

• A clean break of $4,000 would turn this from an ugly correction into something more interesting: a market beginning to question one of its most comfortable defensive assumptions.
