Isaac Okoh is the unofficial chef of the Team England boxing squad and served up a treat by winning Commonwealth Games gold.
The Grays fighter beat Wales’ Connor Williams on a unanimous decision the cruiserweight final to continue making a name for himself.
Okoh’s dad, Chris, is a former Commonwealth cruiserweight champion but Isaac believes he can go further than his old man, with the Olympics next on the agenda in two years.
Commonwealth gold is a decent starter, and Okoh – who often cooks for his fellow fighters – insists he can go right to the very top.
“We’re achieving great things and we’ll keep pushing forward,” he said.
“I genuinely believe I’m one of the best 90kg boxers in the world at the moment and I’m still young.
“Since September last year I’ve been on a great run, winning medals consistently, and when Los Angeles 2028 comes around I’ll be aiming to win another gold.
“I think you’ll see Isaac Okoh back on top of the podium there.
“That’s the pathway we’re on. These tournaments are the building blocks towards those big pay-per-view nights that every boxer dreams about.
“Winning medals at Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and major championships is how you get there. Hopefully one day you’ll see us all headlining those shows ourselves.”
Okoh is one of 251 Team England athletes here in Glasgow, all of whom benefit from crucial National Lottery funding.
He won less than an hour after his housemate Patris Mughalzai, as Team England hoovered up three gold medals on the penultimate morning.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were in the SEC complex with their children during the morning session but chose to watch the netball instead.
Okoh promised Prince George a coaching session – much like breakthrough Wimbledon star Arthur Fery offered a tennis lesson – but it comes with a catch.
“If he wants a pad session, he can give me a call – but my fee’s quite high,” he joked.
“I don’t know if boxing is their thing, but hopefully they come down and watch.
“The crowds have been brilliant all week and the atmosphere has been fantastic, so I hope they’ve all enjoyed it.”
