Dhanteras 2026: November 6, Friday, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. Today, Dhanteras will be celebrated across India, an auspicious occasion for new purchases. Traditionally, this day is associated with buying gold, silver, jewellery, vehicles, utensils and other valuable items.
It is believed that bringing new things home on this day invites blessings, prosperity and good fortune from Goddess Lakshmi.
Higher karat means higher gold purity, but it does not always mean better jewellery.
99.9% pure, commonly used for coins and bars.
91.6% pure, popular for traditional jewellery.
75% pure, commonly used for diamond and stone-set jewellery
58.5% pure, another option for durable, daily-wear designs
Checking the gold price yourself
It is advised not to blindly accept the rate quoted by the jeweller. Better to visit ibjarates.com to check benchmark gold prices and calculate your total gold bill by using the formula:
Price = (net weight * 916 rate) + making charges + 3% GST on the total
Every BIS-hallmarked gold jewellery piece should have a BIS logo, 22K 916 purity mark and A1B2C3 huid.
Don’t just trust the hallmark
Fake hallmarks can be created using laser machines.
Check what you are actually paying gold rates for
A 15 gram necklace does not necessarily contain 15 grams of gold. If it contains diamonds, stones or other materials, their weight must be accounted for separately.
