Style Edit: Le Damier de Louis Vuitton’s 8 new pieces reimagine the checkerboard design

The visual symbols of the grand maison of Louis Vuitton are some of the most recognisable icons in the world, from the LV logo to the four-petalled flowers with which it’s so often interspersed. But perhaps the motif most instantly associated with the legendary Parisian brand is the classic pattern of checks that has adorned its creations since 1888, when it was created as a marker of authenticity.

Known as the Damier pattern, after the French word for “checkerboard”, it’s most commonly found on Louis Vuitton’s bags and on the trunks with which the house first made its name. Two years ago, fine jewellery was added to that list, in the form of the Le Damier de Louis Vuitton collection.

Originally an assembly of a dozen stunning pieces, including rings, earrings and bracelets, it reimagined the pattern on a canvas of diamonds and gold, reinventing the checkerboard as a series of geometric displays of stones, offset by their precious metal backdrop, with the round diamonds handset in slightly oblique squares.

Now, eight more pieces have been added to the collection: five pairs of earrings, two bracelets and a pendant. Together, they tease out more of the unmistakable Le Damier DNA while taking the collection in several bold new directions.

Three of those pairs of earrings are supersized hoops, complementing the small hoops already available in the collection. In yellow, white or rose gold, they’re dripping with Le Damier de Louis Vuitton’s signature geometrically arranged diamonds: 96 in all, together weighing in at 1.34 carats. Adding a new dimension to the collection, they’re joined by two new pairs of ear cuffs, available in rose or yellow gold.

These are complemented by a showstopping pendant necklace, its sinuous yellow gold chain mounted with a trademark two-row gold and diamond centrepiece. With its adjustable, sliding design, it can be worn at any number of lengths. A similar supple aesthetic extends to the chain bracelet in the collection, also in yellow gold and prominently showing off the same shimmering gold and diamond centrepiece.
