Two White Rock South Surrey Baseball Association teams proved themselves golden at a weekend tournament, bringing home two gold medals in their respective divisions.
The WRSSBA 15U AA and 13U A teams won the first-place finishes at the Steve Dodds Memorial All Star Tournament, held June 26-30 at Lionel Courchene Park in Surrey.
Led by head coach Greg Funk, the 15U AA squad went undefeated (5-0-0) the entire tournament, a WRSSBA email noted, marking the second tournament gold win this season for the team.
They previously also won gold at the Kamloops River City Classic in May.
Funk was proud of his athletes after the weekend competition.
“Our guys played very well in all aspects of the games,” he said. “We had strong pitching, the bats were lively and we were defensively sound. We took a business-like approach to the tournament and it worked out for us. It was a lot of fun!”
It was also the first-ever tournament for the newly formed summer 13U A squad. Led by head coach Ian Atkinson, they won gold with a 4-0-1 tournament record.
They next play the Rumble in the Ridge tournament in Maple Ridge July 9.
“It was great to see the hard work paying off. We’ve been working very hard on our defensive structure and it showed throughout the tournament,” Atkinson said.
“More importantly, we’re proud of the way they competed. There were a few tight games along the way, but they maintained their composure and trusted themselves and their teammates to get the job done. It’s certainly a great start to the season.”
