A few years after I upgraded our CPU test rig to an RTX 4090, I was alarmed to find that the graphics card’s 12VHPWR port had become suspiciously charred – necessitating a specialist repair. It’s a common enough problem that quite a few companies have taken a stab at preventing the high voltages that cause the damage, and the latest to step up to the plate is Corsair.
The PSU maker released a ThermalProtect 12V-2×6 cable in May this year, which has extra circuitry built into a cable comb to monitor the temperatures of each wire and shut off the GPU if a 65°C threshold is breached. It’s a smart idea, backed with good reviews from owners of higher-end Nvidia graphics cards. Now, this cable has been built into a new series of Corsair power supplies, which go by the slightly unwieldy title of “RMe Series Platinum”.
The RMe series is one that we’ve used for plenty of Digital Foundry projects, from PC builds to test rigs, so it’s good to see the lineup continue to evolve with a higher power efficiency rating from Cybernetics and the aforementioned high-spec cable.
There are two capacities here, 850W and 1000W, which cost $140/£120 and $180/£150 respectively and come in white or black colours. Both models have a seven-year warranty.
If you need just the cable, which is compatible with any PSU with 12V-2×6 support, they seem to be cheaper now than they were at launch – costing £15 at Amazon UK and $24 at Amazon US.
