Ethiopia Gold Refinery 600 Tonnes Capacity

The proposed facility aims to position the country as a regional refining hub, with an estimated annual gold value of about 80 billion US dollars at full capacity.

Ethiopia’s first gold refinery is targeting annual processing capacity of more than 600 tonnes in its first phase, according to project information, as the country seeks to expand its role in the precious-metals industry.

The facility is also intended to serve as a regional hub for gold refining and value addition, potentially allowing more gold to be processed domestically rather than exported for refining elsewhere.

Project information estimates the value of gold processed annually at approximately 80 billion US dollars once the refinery reaches full capacity. The figure represents the estimated value of the gold handled, rather than revenue that would necessarily accrue to the refinery or the Ethiopian economy.

The project comes as gold remains an important source of foreign currency for Ethiopia, which has sought to increase export earnings and strengthen foreign-exchange inflows. Expanding domestic refining could add processing capacity to the country’s gold supply chain, although the scale of the economic benefits would depend on the volume of gold sourced, operating costs, market access and the share of value retained locally.

Gold refining involves processing mined or recovered gold to achieve specified levels of purity for commercial and industrial use. Domestic refining can support quality verification, traceability and access to international bullion markets, provided facilities meet the relevant technical and regulatory standards.

The refinery’s planned capacity and regional ambitions would place implementation, access to sufficient gold supplies and the ability to meet international standards at the centre of its development.

Further details on the project’s investment cost, location, construction timetable, ownership structure and expected employment have not been provided in the available project information.
