Exeter A Learning Community in Northamptonshire is reflecting on its achievement after being awarded Platinum status by OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), after becoming the first school in Corby to reach this impressive level in April this year.
The OPAL programme, which focuses on transforming children’s experiences of lunchtimes by providing them with a range of provocations and experiences to support them to engage in play, has been at the heart of the school’s development. Over the last two years, the school have developed an on-site forest school, giant sandpit, mud kitchen, outdoor crafts, a stage for dressing up and performances, bikes and scooters and a water play zone. Platinum status recognises Exeter’s outstanding commitment to providing high-quality outdoor play experiences for all pupils.
Assistant Headteacher Sammy Newstead expressed pride in the school’s journey and the collective effort behind the success. She said: “We are so incredibly proud of what we have achieved as a school over the last 2 years. OPAL has changed our children’s playtimes significantly and we are thrilled with the offer we have for our children and this is down to the hard work and support from our staff, OPAL team, parents and our wonderful children.”
Headteacher, Jennifer Doherty explained how the school had always valued play and understood the importance of these early childhood experiences. She said, “This award is a testament to the dedication of the entire school community. Staff have worked tirelessly to reimagine our outdoor spaces, introduce new resources, and embed a culture where play is valued as an essential part of every child’s school experience”.
Support from parents with their ongoing donations and the enthusiasm of pupils have also played a crucial role in making the initiative a success.
Being the first school in Corby to achieve Platinum status highlights Exeter A Learning Community as a leading example of best practice in outdoor play and learning. The school has already supported other schools in the area to recognise the importance of play in children’s development, who have since achieved their own awards.
As Exeter continues to build on this achievement as they move into their third year of OPAL, the school remains committed to providing enriching, inclusive, and joyful play experiences for every child.
