Record Precious Metals Demand at British Royal Mint: Gold Up 94%, Silver Surges 1,000% – News and Statistics

The British Royal Mint reported exceptional demand for precious metals during the early part of the year, according to Kitco News. The institution stated that it concluded its most active financial year on record, with online precious metals transactions hitting an all-time high.

Although the mint does not disclose exact bullion sales figures, it noted that capital gains tax-exempt gold bullion sales rose 94% compared to the same quarter in the prior year. Silver bullion sales recorded a significantly larger increase, surging 1,000%. The Royal Mint described silver as the standout metal for the period between January and March.

Some investors used record prices as an opportunity to take profits, with the value of silver sold back to the mint climbing 3,300%. Despite this volatility, the mint reported that customers bought two ounces of silver for every ounce they sold back, indicating strong conviction in the metal’s longer-term prospects.

Transaction volumes on the royalmint.com website reached a new peak, rising 130% compared to the same quarter of the previous financial year. Stuart OReilly, a Private Wealth Consultant at The Royal Mint, said the figures suggest a fundamental shift in how investors are approaching their portfolios. He noted that precious metals are increasingly viewed as an essential hedge against inflation and potential stock market volatility, driving record numbers of both new and existing customers to the mint.

OReilly added that while the momentum in precious metals has slowed since the end of the first quarter, the price pullback has not affected investor sentiment. He attributed the recent price retracement to short-term interest rate expectations, noting that customers are taking a longer-term view by diversifying into precious metals as a hedge against inflation and a potential stock market correction, often using capital gains tax-exempt UK bullion coins.

For the full 2025/26 fiscal year, the number of customers buying and selling bullion via the mint’s website increased 49%. Approximately 60% of all customers during the year were entirely new to The Royal Mint, with the fourth quarter acquiring more new customers than any previous quarter in the mint’s business history.

The mint also reported strong demand for digital gold and silver assets. DigiGold, the mint’s VAT-free digital precious metals product, accounted for 54% of all transactions.
