Some Southwest customers received emails saying they earned Platinum status, although the airline had said qualification would begin next year. The UC system bought Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay for $193 million. Virgin Red’s referral offer gives eligible U.K. residents 6,000 points each through Nov. 30.

The status emails conflict with Southwest’s earlier announcement that members would not begin earning Platinum until January and that activity during 2026 would not count. The reports do not explain which customers received the messages or whether the airline has revised its qualification rules. The California university system’s $193 million purchase was identified as the Ritz-Carlton property in Half Moon Bay.
Virgin Red’s promotion runs through November 30 and is limited to U.K. residents: both the new member and referrer receive 6,000 points. A new member must complete a qualifying earning transaction within 18 months; shopping through Virgin Red counts, while bank transfers and purchased points do not. Referrers can collect rewards for as many as ten referrals, for a maximum of 60,000 points.
Recipients may gain Platinum earlier than planned, but unresolved rules leave their status uncertain. Virgin Red members also face a deadline and must make an eligible earning transaction within 18 months to receive the bonus.
