Staind have added two major new milestones to their U.S. certification history, with both their breakthrough album “Break The Cycle” and its signature single “It’s Been Awhile” receiving upgraded multi-platinum certifications.
The news comes as Staind continue celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Break The Cycle,” their third studio album. The band have marked the occasion with an anniversary tour as well as a recently released live performance of the record.
Originally certified 5x platinum in September 2003, “Break The Cycle” has now been upgraded to 7x platinum in the United States.
Meanwhile, “It’s Been Awhile” has moved even closer to diamond certification, with the hugely successful single now officially 8x platinum in the U.S. The track had previously been certified gold in September 2008.
In the United States, a platinum certification represents one million units, while gold represents 500,000. Modern RIAA certifications account for both traditional sales and streaming activity, with eligible digital downloads and on-demand streams contributing toward a release’s total units.
For albums, 1,500 on-demand audio or video streams count as one album-equivalent unit, while 10 permanent track downloads also count as one unit. For individual songs, 150 streams equate to one track-equivalent unit.
With “It’s Been Awhile” now at 8x platinum, the song needs another two million certified units to reach the coveted diamond milestone.
