Canada’s Sophia Jensen claimed silver in the women’s canoe single 500-metre race at the season-opening Canoe Sprint World Cup stop on Saturday in Szeged, Hungary.

The Chelsea, Que., native paddled across the finish in a time of one minute 59.75 seconds, finishing behind Olympic doubles champion Sun Mengya of China (1:59.00).

Csofia Cscorba claimed bronze in front of her home crowd after clocking 2:02.54.

A member of the national team since 2017, Jensen made her Olympic debut at the Paris Games in 2024. The 24-year-old earned world-championship silver on home waters in the C-1 500m at the 2022 edition in Dartmouth, N.S.

The World Cup season continues May 14 in Brandenburg, Germany, and also includes a stop in Montreal from July 9-12.
