What should gold investors watch?

Gold prices fell 8.5% in September 2026 to US$4,176 per ounce, despite strong investment demand, highlighting the influence of global economic factors on the precious metal. According to the World Gold Council’s Gold Market Commentary – Go with the Flow, rising US Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar contributed to the decline, alongside a sharp reduction in futures market positions.

However, global physically backed gold ETFs attracted US$10 billion in September, taking quarterly inflows to a record US$31 billion, according to the Council’s Gold ETF Commentary – September 2026.
For Indian investors, the contrasting trends underline that strong investment demand does not guarantee immediate price gains. Gold may help diversify a portfolio, but investors should consider their financial goals, risk tolerance and investment horizon rather than base decisions solely on daily price movements or market sentiment.
