The commemorative coin has a denomination of 1 hryvnia, is made of 925 sterling silver, and is decorated with local gilding.
The National Bank of Ukraine announced that in honor of the 30th anniversary of the hryvnia, celebrated on September 2, a silver commemorative coin “To the 30th Anniversary of the Monetary Reform in Ukraine” was put into circulation.
“Our new commemorative coin is dedicated not only to the anniversary of the monetary reform. It reminds us of the path that Ukraine and the hryvnia have traveled together over thirty years. During this time, the hryvnia has become a symbol of the state’s resilience; its introduction permanently secured Ukraine’s right to independently determine its economic future. Today, our responsibility is to preserve trust in the national currency and do everything to ensure that the hryvnia remains the money of a strong, free European state,” said the NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi.
The monetary reform lasted two weeks – from September 2 to 16, 1996. During this period, coupon-karbovanets were freely and without restrictions exchanged for the new currency unit – the hryvnia. And from September 17, 1996, the hryvnia became the only legal means of payment throughout Ukraine. This was an important stage in establishing Ukraine’s economic independence.
