$1000 work-related deduction: Why the new government tax measure might leave many Australians worse off


It’s being sold as a budget measure and even a tax cut, but the $1000 instant work-related deduction, which is due to start in the 2026-27 financial year, may not be quite as advantageous as it seems.

That’s because Australian Taxation Office data from 2022-23 (the most recent available) shows that the average work-related deduction claimed by taxpayers was $2739, while the median was $1338 – both over the $1000 threshold.
