84 Lumber has named Dustin Hauenstein chief financial officer, bringing in a veteran finance executive with more than 25 years of experience as the privately held building materials supplier marks its 70th anniversary and plans for its next phase of growth.
Hauenstein will oversee the company’s financial operations and support long-term strategic planning, operational performance and financial management. He joins 84 Lumber with experience spanning retail, wholesale and financial services, including multiple CFO roles and responsibility for financial planning and analysis, investor relations, procurement and enterprise strategy.
The appointment adds financial leadership as 84 Lumber manages a sizable national operating footprint serving residential and commercial construction markets. The company currently operates 320 facilities across 34 states and employs more than 7,500 people. Its network includes building materials stores, component manufacturing plants, engineered wood product centers and door shops.
“Dustin joins 84 Lumber as we celebrate our milestone 70th Anniversary, and he will play an important role in defining decades to come as the company continues to grow, innovate, and lead the industry,” 84 Lumber President Maggie Hardy said.
Hauenstein most recently served as senior vice president at Designer Brands Inc., where his responsibilities included serving as CFO of both DSW and the company’s Brand Portfolio, as well as head of corporate finance. He oversaw enterprise financial planning and analysis, investor relations and strategic procurement.
During his tenure at Designer Brands, Hauenstein was involved in shaping the company’s post-pandemic financial strategy and advancing initiatives focused on profitability, operational discipline and longer-term performance. That experience gives him a background in navigating changing consumer markets and aligning financial strategy with broader operating priorities.
Before joining Designer Brands, Hauenstein spent more than 12 years at JPMorgan Chase & Co. He held several executive leadership positions across the company’s retail and bank operations businesses, managing large teams and working on business transformation initiatives.
The mix of retail, wholesale and financial services experience is particularly relevant to 84 Lumber’s operating model. As a national building materials supplier, the company must coordinate purchasing, inventory, manufacturing and distribution across hundreds of facilities while serving construction customers exposed to changing housing activity and commercial development conditions.
Hauenstein’s appointment gives 84 Lumber a CFO with experience across both corporate finance and operational transformation as the company considers its longer-term capital and growth priorities.
“I am honored to join 84 Lumber and grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an iconic and respected company,” Hauenstein said. “I look forward to working alongside the leadership team to support the company’s continued growth and build on its strong financial foundation.”
Founded in 1956 and headquartered in Eighty Four, Pennsylvania, 84 Lumber supplies building materials, manufactured components and related services for single-family and multifamily residential construction as well as commercial projects. The company is privately held and owned by Hardy, and is a certified women’s business enterprise.
Its scale across stores and specialized manufacturing operations gives 84 Lumber exposure to multiple parts of the construction supply chain. Beyond distributing building materials, the company’s component plants, engineered wood product centers and door shops provide additional capabilities for builders seeking manufactured products and services from a common supplier.
That integrated footprint also makes financial and operational discipline increasingly important as the business grows. Managing capital allocation, procurement and performance across a 320-location network requires coordination between corporate strategy and local execution, placing the CFO role in a significant position within the company’s expansion plans.
84 Lumber enters its eighth decade as one of the largest privately held companies in the building materials sector. Hauenstein’s arrival gives the company an executive with experience managing complex finance organizations as it works to strengthen its operating platform and pursue continued growth across U.S. residential and commercial construction markets.
