Greenberg Traurig has added Sheldon Hunt Laing as a shareholder in its Private Funds Group in New York, expanding the firm’s capabilities across fund formation, capital structuring, and private equity.
Laing joins Greenberg Traurig from Kirkland & Ellis, where he advised private fund sponsors on the formation, operation and compliance of private investment vehicles.
His practice spans buyout funds, growth equity funds and late-stage venture funds along with a range of customized investment structures.
Those structures include co-investment vehicles, separately managed accounts, continuation funds and other arrangements used by established and emerging private fund sponsors.
Laing also advises fund managers on governance, investor relations and strategic issues beyond the initial formation process.
Greenberg Traurig said his practice complements the firm’s ability to support fund sponsors throughout the lifecycle of an investment vehicle, including capital formation and more complex structuring matters.
The addition is particularly relevant as private fund managers increasingly use structures beyond traditional flagship funds.
Continuation vehicles, co-investments and separately managed accounts can provide sponsors and limited partners with additional ways to deploy capital, hold portfolio assets for longer periods or tailor investment exposure.
Laing’s experience across these structures expands Greenberg Traurig’s ability to advise both established managers and newer sponsors as their businesses and investor relationships develop.
Laing earned an LL.B. with distinction and a Bachelor of Social Science degree in Social Anthropology and Law from the University of Cape Town.
He is admitted to practice in New York and speaks Afrikaans and English.
The move also gives Greenberg Traurig another senior lawyer with direct experience at one of the largest private equity-focused law firms as it continues building its own private capital practice.
