From homes to hard infrastructure, the cost of climate risk is growing

A new report from the Schneider Electric Research Institute, climate risk threatens $388bn in data centre asset value – an estimated 38% of the world’s total $1trn-worth of data centres.

The report analysed 8,572 geocoded data centre facilities across 120 countries. Collectively, the capacity of these sites is 90.8 gigawatts (GW).

Report authors calculated the total climate-related financial risk based on five factors: cooling costs, carbon penalties, business interruption, physical disruption and heat productivity. Business interruption makes up almost a third of the total climate risk. The findings are based on a business-as-usual scenario with no adaptation preparations.
