Texas property tax decoded: Dallas Morning News hosts event

Do you have questions about the property tax process? You’re not alone.

Most Texans should have received their appraisal notices, and the deadline in Dallas County to file property tax protests is May 15 or 30 days after your notice is received, whichever is later.

The process can be confusing, which is why Dallas Morning News real estate reporter Nick Wooten and assistant business editor Kyle Arnold will be live on Facebook on Thursday, May 7, at noon to answer questions and provide information on all things property taxes. It will also be available later on YouTube.

“Property taxes are complicated and stressful, and we’ll do our best to demystify the process,” Arnold said Wednesday.

The Dallas Morning News recently launched TX Tax, a tool to help residents of Dallas County protest their property taxes by finding comparable properties, generating a custom report and helping prepare homeowners for their hearing before the Appraisal Review Board. The service costs $69 per year plus tax, and a discounted rate is available to current Dallas Morning News subscribers.

By protesting the market value of their home, homeowners can lower their annual property tax bill, and in Texas that can be hefty. The Lone Star State owns the ninth-highest effective property tax rate in the U.S., according to analysis by Construction Coverage.

Wooten hopes Thursday’s event will answer folks’ “pressing questions about property taxes and provide some useful information.”
