Ruby White vowed to deliver a stunning Commonwealth gold after confidently guaranteeing herself a medal in Glasgow.
The Trowbridge-based ‘Pocket Rocket’, 19, comprehensively outboxed Ugandan Angel Katushabe to win on a unanimous decision and set up a 51kg semi-final showdown on Friday.
White, the 2024 under-19 world champion, is one of the brightest rising stars on the British boxing circuit and was roared on by a raucous English contingent here.
And after booking a bout with Namibian Mischa Monique Araes for a place in the final, she believes she can go all the way.
“I’m going to win that gold medal – I promise you now,” she said.
“I’ve got my faith, I’ve got my family and my support behind me – all I need to do is get in there and let my hands go.
“I keep getting better and better with each fight and I’m on the right track.
“I’m 19 and never been to a multi-sport Games like this – it’s the best venue I’ve ever boxed in and so I’m so proud to represent Team England.
“I’ve got to get gold.”
White is one of 251 Team England athletes here in Glasgow, all of whom benefit from crucial National Lottery funding.
She toppled South African Thandolwethu Truelove Mathiba in her opening Glasgow bout before going through the gears against Katushabe to comfortably advance to the semi-finals.
White is a student of the game when she’s not in the ring and hopes more pre-fight analyse can fire her into the final.
“It goes so quickly in the ring – it feels like I just walked in there,” she said.
“I was a lot more strong-minded getting in the ring – I need to watch it back but I felt good in there.
“I always analyse and watch them back – I watched the last fight back about 20 times.
“I’m doing what I love and I think I’m good at doing it!”
