Africa takes center stage in global public financial management as Ghana hosts “IPSASB”

The African Union Commission (AUC), the Government of the Republic of Ghana, the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB), the African Association of Accountants General (AAAG) and the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) will convene the IPSASB Public Financial Management Forum and IPSASB Quarterly Board Meeting in Accra, Ghana, from 14 to 18 September 2026.

The gathering will bring together about 150 delegates from Africa and beyond, including IPSASB Board members, technical advisors, observers, Accountants General, public financial management experts, professional accountancy organizations, and development partners. This marks a significant moment for Ghana and Africa, as IPSASB returns to Ghana for the first time since 2007, when the country hosted the Board’s first-ever meeting on the African continent.

The week will begin on 14 September with a high-level continental roundtable under the theme: “From Standards to Systems: Building Africa’s IPSAS Implementation Architecture for Transparent, Comparable and Trusted Public Financial Reporting.”

The roundtable will focus on moving IPSAS implementation beyond adoption of standards toward building strong systems, institutions, professional capacity, and regional cooperation. Key discussions will cover asset and liability recognition, systems readiness, professionalization, sustainability reporting, natural resource accounting, peer learning, and technical support.

The forum is expected to strengthen Africa’s voice in global public sector accounting standardsetting and support the continent’s commitment to transparency, accountability, good governance, and sound management of public resources, in line with Agenda 2063.

For Ghana, hosting the forum reflects its continued leadership in public financial management reform and its commitment to transparent, accountable, and efficient use of public resources. At the close of the event, participants are expected to agree on practical priority actions and collaborative initiatives to advance a coordinated African approach to IPSAS implementation and improve the credibility, comparability, and trustworthiness of public sector financial reporting.
