UBS has reduced its palladium price forecast to approximately $1,100 per ounce over the next 12 months, citing changes in investor positioning and options market sentiment.

The Swiss bank lowered its previous price projections for December, March and June by between $100 and $200 per ounce, reflecting its revised assessment of the precious metal’s market outlook.

The adjustment comes alongside a decline in China’s palladium imports, while the widening price difference between palladium and platinum could influence demand from the automotive industry.

UBS Revises Palladium Price Expectations

UBS identified weakening investor positioning and increasingly bearish sentiment in the options market as factors behind its revised palladium forecast.

According to the bank, these indicators suggest that financial market participants have become more cautious about the metal’s price prospects.

The updated forecast places palladium at approximately $1,100 per ounce over the coming 12 months, with the bank reducing its earlier December, March and June projections by $100 to $200 per ounce.

The revision reflects UBS’s assessment of current market conditions rather than an established future price outcome.

China’s Palladium Imports Decline

China’s palladium imports decreased from nearly 8.6 metric tons in April to 3.4 metric tons in September.

The figures represent a reduction of approximately 5.2 metric tons over the period, equivalent to a decline of around 60%.

The decrease in Chinese imports is another development relevant to the palladium market, alongside the changes in investor positioning identified by UBS.

Palladium Discount to Platinum Could Support Automotive Demand

Despite the downward revision to its price forecast, UBS identified the widening discount of palladium relative to platinum as a potential factor supporting demand.

The growing price difference is improving the economics of substituting palladium for platinum in gasoline vehicle autocatalysts.

This substitution could provide some support for palladium consumption in the automotive sector, potentially offsetting part of the pressure reflected in the bank’s revised outlook.

The extent of any resulting demand increase remains uncertain.

Palladium Market Outlook Reflects Investment and Industrial Demand Factors

UBS’s revised forecast incorporates changes in financial market sentiment alongside developments affecting physical demand for palladium.

Weaker investor positioning, bearish options market sentiment and lower Chinese imports are among the factors identified in the bank’s assessment.
